| Interview mit dem Illustrator Dave Cutler. |
11.12.2001
aktuell: How did you start your career? When did you become "famous"? Dave Cutler: I began illustrating about 16 years ago. I loved both design and painting, but felt as though I was more of an illustrator than a designer. I never really considered myself "famous", but thank you for thinking of me as such. I began getting a lot more work about 5 years ago, when I began to get a lot of exposure and recognition for my work due a lot in part to my relationship with Stock Illustration Source (Images.com). Being in those catalogs brought my work and way of illustrating to many art buyers around the world. aktuell: When you get an order for an illustration what inspires you? Dave Cutler: I try to get the purpose of the illustration down to its simplest terms, and then try to come up with a visual metaphor that expresses that thought. aktuell: Which techniques do you use? Dave Cutler: I now work completely digitally using a Mac computer. I try to use a lot of texture to create atmosphere, and a "dry brush" look. I work hard to make it hard to distinguish my digital work from my older traditional work. aktuell: How did new technology (computer) influence your work? Dave Cutler: It was a big influence in that it is now my medium of creating illustrations. Being digital has many advantages. I have more options in the way I approach my work, without running the risk of ruining a painting while working under tight deadlines. aktuell: Why do your drawings not have a title? Dave Cutler: No reason really. I never really had a reason to. I create many images each year. It would be hard to entitle each one, so I simply use a numbering system. aktuell: On a lot of motifs we can see water and boats. Is this because you are living on the waterside or do you have a special relationship to water and water sports? Dave Cutler: I did live near water, and I do love it. I find scenes that take place on the water represent so many things: challenges, sport, freedom, nature, excitement, hope... aktuell: It seems as if you are making fun of the business behaviour - because of personal bad experiences or only because you are a good observer? Dave Cutler: I hope it's because I'm a good observer. aktuell: People on your illustrations seem to be alone, e.g. they are standing alone on different hills or buildings. Do people, in your eyes, have communication-problems? Dave Cutler: No, not really. I usually have people alone because I think it enables a viewer to relate better to the situation. I hope that when you view my illustrations, you feel as though you are that individual in those circumstances. aktuell: Are you inspired by your children? And if so, how does your family influence your artwork? Dave Cutler: My children inspire me in everything I do, so I am sure they inspire my artwork as well. My children, a son and a daughter see life in simple, clean and innocent terms. That helps me see our complex world a lot better. aktuell: Will your next illustrations reflect on the terror attacks from 11. September? Dave Cutler: I normally work on a commissioned basis, meaning I create images based on the needs of my clients. So far, I have done a number of illustrations so far on that topic for some of my clients. However, I did create an image on my own that was my tribute to Sept 11 tragedy. Die Fragen stellte Dagmar Lange.
